Developing Water Use Profiles of Winter and Summer Cover/Opportune Crops in Semi-arid Environments of Eastern New Mexico
Water is the deciding and foremost limiting factor of crop production in rain-fed environments of New Mexico. This project facilitates various New Mexico State University entities to participate and develop water use efficient crops for Eastern New Mexico. Researching and understanding the water use dynamics of various forage and grain crops and planning cropping systems accordingly through efficient management of available water resources will reduce the seasonal risk of crop failures in approximately380,000 acres in New Mexico alone. The outcome of this project will ensure the increased productivity, sustainability, and food and forage security of New Mexico agriculture.
